Bummer. Doesn't NJ have one of those?

How much is your car valued at? At the end, my Ford Contour was valued at some tiny amount. The excise tax was $25 and it was wonderful. Then the Mini came. Things got a little worse.

In case this makes you feel any better, at least you didn't get a vanity plate in the Spring. All vanity plates, regardless of when you acquired them, roll over in November.

The form explains that the excise tax is in lieu of property tax. Which is bullshit, because NY and NJ don't charge property tax on registered vehicles. Connecticut does apparently.

I'm paying over $100. They have a chart indicating how they calculate car value on their website. The fee doesn't bug me so much as the fact that every time I turn around, the state hits me with another random fee that I didn't know about, for reasons they fail to elaborate on.

For example, the 2 points on my license which had no penalty in NJ, but amount to a $300+ increase in my insurance premium. The 2 points that would most likely have been waived in Mass because of weather conditions, but might not be waived now, because the accident happened in NJ and there's no mechanism to remove them there, because NJ doesn't give a shit about 2 points.

Anyway, I stand by my post.
